Codi brought Cowboy back to us in the morning and we took him to the vet to get antibiotics and see if stitches were needed. Afterall, it didn't really even bleed. Upon closer inspection, the vet realized it was more serious than expected, so Cowboy was sedated and he received about 10 stitches in his neck muscle and around 20 stitches on the skin to close it up.
This is when the vet opened it to see the damage. His collar had been holding it shut.

A drain tube was inserted to let the fluids drain out while it healed.
He looked like Frankenstein.

But, just like his broken leg as a puppy, this didn't phase him at all and he was back to normal the next day. And the bonus: the vet scraped the plaque off his teeth while he was sedated, so his breath is finally tolerable!
Like after his other injuries, Cowboy recovered completely. He's back to his annoying self: peeing in the bathroom since he doesn't like going outside when it's 15 below zero outside. But...he's still a cute dog, grey beard and all. He turns 8 in February!!!

I can't stay mad at him. Especially when he's been through so much - that cut looked NASTY!
